Mushroom Festivals — The Soul of Portuguese Mycology

Portugal’s mushroom festivals are more than fairs. They are gastronomic events, scientific gatherings, and celebrations of rural life all at once. You can taste mushroom dishes in village taverns, walk through the forest with a mycologist, and attend a biodiversity lecture — all in a single day.

This guide covers all the major festivals with practical information: when, where, how to get there, and what to expect.

Festival Map by Region

North (November)

  • Mogadouro, Paredes de Coura, Vinhais, Miranda do Douro, Monção

Centre (November–December)

  • Alcaide (Fundão), Penela, Belmonte

South (February–March)

  • Cabeça Gorda (Beja), Cumeada (Reguengos), Chamusca
Two seasons — two regions. Autumn festivals (November) are concentrated in the north and centre — saffron milk caps, boletes, chanterelles. Spring festivals (March) are in the south — silarca, truffles. This reflects the climatic divide between “green” and “dry” Portugal.
