Organized Walks and Mycotours

Organized Walks and Mycotours

Why Go with a Group?

An organized mushroom walk (passeio micológico) is the best way to start exploring Portugal’s fungi. With an experienced guide, you’ll:

  • Learn to identify key species in the field, not just from a book
  • Discover safe foraging spots
  • Avoid dangerous mistakes — the guide will help distinguish edible from toxic species
  • Taste the finds — many walks end with a tasting or showcooking session
For beginners, an organized walk is the safest way to start. You’ll gain practical skills that are impossible to get from books and the internet alone.

How to Sign Up

Step by Step

  1. Choose your region and dates — main season: October–December
  2. Search for events:
    • Association websites (pantorra.pt, boletosdeorum.pt)
    • Facebook groups: “Cogumelos de Portugal”, “Cogumelos Silvestres Portugal”
    • Municipal websites (“Agenda” or “Eventos” sections)
    • visitportugal.com (search “cogumelos” or “mushrooms”)
  3. Contact early — popular walks fill up 1–2 weeks in advance
  4. Ask about the language — most are conducted in Portuguese only

What to Bring

Even on an organized walk, pack:

  • Comfortable hiking boots
  • Layered clothing (mornings are cool)
  • Waterproof jacket
  • Phone with camera
  • Water and snacks

The organizer usually provides baskets and knives, but confirm in advance.
