Safety

Safety is the top priority when foraging mushrooms. Portugal records poisoning cases every year, including fatalities — most commonly caused by the death cap (Amanita phalloides), which is found throughout the country.

This section covers the most dangerous species, their look-alikes among edible mushrooms, what to do in case of poisoning, and basic safety rules.

Important: if you suspect mushroom poisoning, call emergency services immediately: 112 (Portugal’s universal emergency number).
